The 4 mascaras that absolutely blow my mind
Okay so maybe that heading was a bit of click bait….but I am using this headline analyser that kept telling me: Ain’t nobody going to read that lame post titled ‘My 4 favourite mascaras’. Add in ‘absolutely blow my mind‘ and apparently I have a better chance of luring all you gals here. I’m a sneaky gal right?
Totally off topic intro aside though, I really do love the 4 mascaras that I want to chat to you about today for different reasons, so let’s see what my top 4 are. In no particular order……
1. Better than sex – Too Faced (RSP R365 from Eyeseehue Makeup)
If you’ve ever watched a US You Tuber, at some point, one of them whips out this mascara. The name intrigues you already, so when they all put it on the ‘Fave of 2015/2016’ list, you kind of feel like you have to have it!
The wand has a very slight hourglass curve to it, with the ends on each side rather large when I compare it to some of my other mascaras. Initially I did not like this mascara at all and was terribly disappointed when I actually tried it. Literally just crickets in the room after I put it on my lashes.
I started reading online and quite a few people seemed to feel the way I felt. Thankfully I then stumbled on a tip that said you should wipe the excess product off the wand and then apply it to the lashes. I find that actually made a real difference and as a result I actually use the mascara now. I’m still of the opinion this one is a bit over-hyped and still with the extra work to apply it, but overall it’s a great mascara. I have no flaking and after a few hours my lashes still look pretty good.
2. Roller Lash – Benefit (RSP R365 for a full sized + a mini from Red Square Beauty)
If you’ve followed my blog since the beginning, you’ll know that this mascara is my ride or die. I can’t go without it and I have repurchased it quite a few times.
The wand and the bristles are plastic, and the wand curves to one side (if that makes sense?). The formula is never clumpy and I can literally apply 2 or 3 coats and not have clumpy lashes at all. It adds great length and separates and coats every single lash.
3. Rock n Doll – Essence (RSP R59,95 from Clicks )
This is a straight, one sized barrel wand and then there are long bristles on one side and shorter bristles on the other. I use the shorter bristles on my lower lashes.
I was really surprised by how much I liked this mascara. It adds amazing length and volume. I do find the formula to be very ‘wet’ so a lot of product gets onto the brush, but I just wipe the excess product off and I’m good to go. For R59,95, one doesn’t mind wiping away excess product though….yes I’m talking to you Too Faced…..
After 2 coats it can become a bit clumpy, but I personally do not mind clumpy, if it’s clumpy in the right way. Yes that totally makes sense!
4. Wide awake – Avon (RSP around R149,95 from an Avon Rep)
I have never tried Avon mascara before this one, so I didn’t really know what to expect. The wand is ‘twisty’ and I think that is the thing I like least about it. I find it difficult to grip my lashes, but that being said, it does the job. How I don’t know, because I don’t feel any sort of ‘tug’ on my lashes, but they are definitely coated, seperated and lengthened. I also don’t find the formula to be clumpy at all. The ‘Wide Awake’ mascara definitely does lift the lashes and give me that ‘wide awake’ look that I absolutely love, especially on a Monday morning when all mama wants to do is sleep…..
I’ve personally never noticed any flakiness after a full day’s wear of the above-mentioned mascaras. On my lashes, they last pretty much all day. Let me know in the comments if you’ve tried any of these and what your current favourite mascara is 😉

Loved this post ???? i only ever use essence mascaras ???????? recently i purchased the Catrice glam and doll mascara and its kinda good

I didn’t love the Catrice Glam and Doll, but I see so many people love it. You know why though? Somebody said it’s a dupe for the Roller Lash and I think just based on that I judged it, which wasn’t fair. Maybe I should give it another go.

Do you not find that you have any issues with the excess product on the wand? I love the wand though, I forgot to say that in the review. The bristles are very unique.

I am generally an essence or avon girl. I’ve always used the same mascaras because if it works I generally don’t try something else.. BUT at the risk of sounding like an old fart. I think I will try some of the recommended ones 🙂

I have 2 of the mascaras on your list, roller lash and better than sex. I love both of them. I am not fond of essence mascaras, I find the formula irritate my contact lenses and I end up with teary eyes for an entire day.

I tried one other one before and didn’t love it. This one I like. I’ve been having eye issues lately so everything makes my eyes red. I just pop antihistamines and antibiotic drops. So bad. lol.

I really want… no, NEED, to try the Benefit and Too Faced mascaras. I’m just trying to wrap my head around spending so much on on mascara haha!

I’d go with the mini Benefit one. If you’re like me and swop out mascara often (sensitive eyes won’t allow me to wear mascara for more than 3 to 6 months), it will last you the 3 months . But economically I like to do for the dual pack for 365. Maybe split it with somebody.
Mascara is such an obsession of mine though. Always chasing that perfect lash. Lol. Thanks for reading.
