Adventure time with Swashbuckle Lil {#TellAStoryDay}
Ahoy me maties! Today’s we’ve got another kids book review for you, and this time it’s one for the older kiddos. Due to today being ‘International Tell A Story Day’, I thought I’d dedicate my #FollowUpFriday to this cause instead, and encourage you to tell your child a story today <3
I’ve mentioned many times that I am an avid reader. Before the days of social media and phone addiction, I spent every spare minute reading! It became quite expensive, because I could easily finish a book a day, so I was spending thousands on books every month. I hope my kids love of reading will not drive me to poverty but, I do love that they love to read. Addison, my 9yr old is getting a bit lazy, but I think it’s due to the hectic workload of Gr. 4. However, when a shipment of books arrived on our doorstep from Pan Macmillan a few weeks ago, I saw that spark in her eyes! She went through 3 of the books already and today I’m reviewing one that she literally read in under 24hrs…The Adventures of Swashbuckle Lil, A pirate’s life!
Swashbuckle Lil is a pirate! A good pirate….so don’t worry, she won’t give your kids nightmares! When there is somebody that needs saving, Lil’s your girl, bold and brave. There’s an evil pirate named Stinkbeard, and oh my…he’s quite the stinky villain! Stinkbeard causes all sorts of trouble! In the first story, he sets out to kidnap Lil’s teacher, so Lil needs to save the day! And once she’s done with that, she heads on to her next adventure that involves saving sports day at school, uncovering stolen treasures and hopefully she’ll make it to the party! Lil has a trusty sidekick (as any good heroine should have), a trusty parrot named….uh…Carrot..? Carrot is with her every step of the way in this book, that features 4 delightful stories. Also, they rhyme…you know I love a good rhyming book 😉
What I also love about this book is that it’s long enough for my 9yr old to read, but due to it featuring 4 stories, short enough for me to read to my younger kids as well. Also, she’s a pirate….so my daughter and my sons enjoyed this book!
Swashbuckle Lil: The Secret Pirate, by author Elli Woollard and illustrator Laura Ellen Anderson, is the first in an exciting series with two rip-roaringly rhyming, brilliantly illustrated stories in each book which make the perfect transition from parent-led to independent reading.
As a mom, with a Gr 1 child who is learning to read, I can see how this book will be easy for him to tackle as we go from me reading it, to him reading it. My 9yr old quite enjoyed this and gave it a huge thumbs up. She can’t wait to see what’s next in the series! Worthy mention as well…I love the illustrations! Lil’s character is really brought to life in these black and white drawings.
Swashbuckle Lil retails for R179, and you can find it online at Loot, Takealot, CNA and various other online retailers and in stores. Pan Macmillan has such an amazing range of kiddies book! Honestly…enough with more toys than they’ll ever need, invest in books ♥️
Thank you Pan Macmillan for sending this over. Even though books have been sent to me, I am not obligated to review them. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
