{CLOSED} Let’s Raise Little Readers! + {52 Book set Giveaway}

When my daughter was in Grade 1, I was BEYOND CLUELESS. The kids had to read x amount of books for the year and they’d attain a reading badge. I found out about this at the end of the 3rd term, when I noticed a lot of kids walking around with these badges! #TrueStory. I am THAT mom. My poor child managed to read about 90 books in the last term, but sadly did not qualify for the badge. In Gr 2 and 3 though, she killed it and got it within the first term. Around 120 books I think? She even did an extra 30 and got a certificate beyond her badge. So when Joshua started Gr. 1, mama was ready! I knew about the list, and I was going to make sure we motored our way through them, at record speed! lol.

Reading badge aside though, kids need to read! They need to get off their tablets and X-Box games and they need to read. They will do better in spelling tests, and believe me, they do A LOT of spelling tests. Reading helps them when they get to the higher grades, they are better able to grasp test and exam papers.  They’re finding out that children cannot comprehend what they’re reading, because they aren’t reading! Makes sense right?

Joshua, fortunately is an excellent reader. I was lucky that a friend lent me 2 fantastic book sets, progressive readers that start out easy and get harder as the child progresses. I love that they push him to learn new sounds and words with every book. However, said friend, got these books in the UK, and I was desperate to find similar sets in SA. I was ecstatic when I saw that Pan Macmillan actually has book sets like this! I found one that has a whopping 52 books!

This collection contains 52 books that will help children on their way to becoming confident readers. Each book has been Book Banded (the system used in primary schools) and is suitable for children aged between 4 and 7. The books will help children gain confidence and enjoy reading for pleasure. From castle mysteries to superhero exploits, the stories are illustrated and progress gradually as children become more fluent in reading. Compiled in consultation with a literacy expert, these books will help children at the earliest reading levels.

I love that these books are colour coded, to show you which age group each set is for. I find that, the reading is prescribed according to UK standards, because I don’t know any 4yr olds who can read (well except me, according to my mom..lol). Maybe your child can though?? That being said, you can progress to the next band if your child is ready, irrespective of their age.

We have enjoyed these books, and to ensure we are not just racing to the end, I love that there are questions at the end of each book. So you can actually test their comprehension of what they’ve read. I always spend the extra time, going back, asking the questions, quizzing him. We’re 60 books down to the reading badge, and we have 60 to go! This set is going to take us to just before the finish line. This will be great to even keep for Gr. 2 and my younger son will also be going through this set once he can read as well. Any day now, right Adam?
