Scrabble Junior is going to teach my kids to spell! {+ Giveaway Closed}
You all know by now, I am a parent that loves to encourage her kids to read. I’ve noticed though, that as much as Addison reads…her spelling borders on ATROCIOUS some days. When I read her oral or check her school workbooks…I find myself scratching my head. Like, how do you read so much, but you can barely spell? I think I’ve just hoped that the situation would remedy itself…eventually she’ll know how to spell everything…like her mama…right? Joshua is quite the reader as well, maybe more so than Addison, and I’m starting to worry….will he also be spelling terribly despite being able to read well?
Our kids are overloaded and as much as I want to put in extra time with school work, realistically there is no time. There’s school until 2:15pm. Then extra curriculars until 3:30pm, with the kids getting home at 4pm and still needing to do homework. Where is the downtime? Or the extra time to practice additional spelling? There is no time. Or is there?
Some of my absolute favourite memories of my childhood, is being in the dining room around our massive round dining room table, sitting and playing Scrabble with my family. My aunt and uncle were always up for a game (or 7) of Scrabble when they came to visit. I am a bit of a spelling/reading/english nerd, so Scrabble was my jam! We had the same Scrabble board game for probably 15 years….maybe longer and sad to say, with moving and having kids that destroy everything, we eventually lost it. Typing this post now, that revelation makes me a bit sad. Anyways…..
Mattel recently sent over the Scrabble junior board game and I was thrilled. Firstly, it really just filled me with such nostalgia and took me back to those Friday nights. Secondly, I realised…this was my solution to this spelling problem.
What is Scrabble Junior?
Kid-sized words and colorful pictures make it fun to match letter tiles to words on the grid. Players move their funny tokens up the score track as they score points. When all of the tiles have been placed on the board, the player with the most points wins! Don’t worry, your little ones won’t outgrow this game; just turn the board over for the advanced level, where they come up with their own words. It’s going to be letter-matching fun for everyone with Scrabble Junior! Scrabble Junior is letter-matching fun for your little one.
What do I love about it?
The ingenuity with this board game is that there are 2 sides of the board, with one being a more ‘junior’ side, flip it over and you have an empty and more advanced game to play. My kids are ages 6 and 9 at this stage, so if they want to play on their own, they can. Joshua will definitely be able to play with the help of the prompts on junior side of the board, as the cute pictures and letter prompts make it a bit easier. Once Joshua is a bit more confident, we’ll move to the advanced side of the board where he’ll have to do it all on his own.Not only does this game stimulate their brains to think up words, but if they spell incorrectly, there’s the opportunity to correct them and teach them in that moment. This to me is the key feature of this game, and I personally thank Scrabble for the fact that I can pretty much spell anything today! I remember sitting with that dictionary to make sure I was not getting played! I don’t even think my kids know what a dictionary is at this stage.
Family Games Night
We are trying to create family traditions, so Saturday night is already movie night in our home! Mattel has now ensured that we add a new tradition… Friday night has been dubbed ‘Games night‘ in our home, so there’ll be no tablets and disconnected family time…we’ll be having lots of fun! Just don’t tell them that mom is actually using this as an English lesson for them.
Now for the fun part! Mattel has offered to give away a Scrabble Junior set as well as a set of UNO cards to one lucky reader!!
