The one where I too am on holiday….relaxing, sipping cocktails next to a luxury pool….because that is typically how my holidays go. Yours too? ‘Oh dahling‘…. how lucky are we? Okay…back to earth…. The first enounter
I don’t even know how I stumbled upon this place, but our first trip to Redberry farm was back in 2012 I think. We were on holiday at Pine Lake Marina and decided to take a drive to George. I remember Joshua was fast asleep, so we left him with my brother and took Addison for the drive. She and her grannies went strawberry picking while hubby and I enjoyed the quiet time and something to eat. The strawberry picking was so much fun….a novelty for us at the time. Also we felt those were literally the best darn strawberries we had ever eaten! We declared that anytime we ever ventured to the Garden Route, a stop at Redberry Farm would be compulsory.
We’ve been back!
We made good on that declaration and have been back a few times. The next time we stopped there, lo and behold, Joshua was asleep AGAIN. So hubby and Addison went to enjoy themselves on the mini trains, the play area and ate…..while I sat in the car. Joshua slept for probably a good 2hrs! I’m one of those moms….I’ll NEVER wake a kid and it was chilly that day. FML.
The last time we went back, we had Adam as well…and Joshua WAS AWAKE! Hallelujah! Side note…this kid loves to sleep! He even said so to me the other day….’Mom I just love to sleep!’ The place has had a major revamp and there are now many other little ‘stalls’, like a pizzeria, an ice cream shop (the rocky road cookies….YUM!) and some others I didn’t get a chance to venture into. There was something for every one of my kids to do. They loved the mini trains, Addison went strawberry picking again and the kids (and dad) went on the pedal carts! The food was pretty darn good as well and reasonably priced. There was a ‘buy one get one free burger‘ special on that day. Addison fell in love with their smoothies, in fact the whole family ended up stealing sips of Addison’s smoothie. It was really good.
What I love is that it’s just a chilled sort of space. You can sit back….let the kids play, run wild…and before you know it….3hrs have passed easily! Before we leave, I always pop into the farm stall to pick up some preserves, sauces and biscuits. So mama also gets her shopping on…because you know on holiday…we want to shop! We will arrive there at 9am and leave around 1pm…and head back to our digs to relax for the rest of the day. You don’t feel like you need to go anywhere else…and for me, that’s the magic of Redberry farm.
So now that schools out….if you are venturing to the Western Cape, I would encourage you to visit Redberry farm if you’re looking for something to do with the kids, that also allows you some down time. Are you heading away for the ‘Spring break’? Let me know if you know of any hidden gems I need to check out!
