What the ladybird heard NEXT {Kids Book Review}
Happy Friday everybody! What a week this has been….Have kids they said, it would be fun they said!! Addison had to build a skeleton, Joshua prepare an oral, extramurals ending at between 4pm and 6:30pm for 4 days this week…..add a generous serving of gastro for me and 2 sick boys (chest and throat infection plus tonsilitis and glandular fever!) into the mix, reduced sleep…and well, mama needs a holiday!! This was literally all Monday to Thursday. That’s excluding homework, work deadlines, blogging and just breathing as well…… What a lovely moan session, glad I got that off my chest! #SorryNotSorry
The point of today’s post? Well it’s Friday, no surprises….it’s #BookReviewFriday and today I’m reviewing a Julia Donaldson book, one of my now favourite, kids book authors. What the Ladybird Heard Next is part of the ‘What the Ladybird Heard‘ ‘series’.
What is the book about?
Those crafty robbers Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len are out of jail! They’re heading back to the farm with another cunning plan to cause trouble. They’ve been stealing eggs from the fat red hen, but now they’re setting their sights higher and are planning to steal the fat red hen herself! Fortunately the quiet, clever ladybird is on their trail, and she and her farm animal friends have a plan of their own.
Join the cow, the goose, the horse, the sheep, the cat, and everyone’s favourite ladybird in this fantastically funny farmyard caper from the stellar picture book partnership of Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks, creators of What the Ladybird Heard. With slapstick action, animal noises and a mysterious Snuggly Snerd bird. What the Ladybird Heard Next is a story you’ll be reading over and over again.
My thoughts
This book is absolutely delightful! As always, I am a sucker for cute rhyming sentences! The illustrations are just gorgeous….and GLITTER….on ever page! Even poop and muck….peppered with glitter sprinkles! I mean, don’t we all wish we had glitter flecked poop? Just me? Okay…moving along then.
This book is aimed at 3-5yr olds, but my 7yr old also loves it. I love reading this to Adam (3) and he loves tracing the glitter, feeling the texture on the pages. The illustrations are so bright and interesting. Joshua commented that whoever drew the book was very talented….that’s you Lydia Monks! He loves reading this, especially before bed. It’s a fun and quick bedtime read. I find Julia Donaldson books are great beginner reading books for your end of Grade 1, beginning of Grade 2 kids.
We received the book with the CD. Adam however keeps thinking it’s a movie and asks if he can watch it. This is great for the car….with the book, this makes the perfect travel companion! The picture book with the CD retails for around R165, and around R105 without the CD and is available at all leading book retailers.
Are you familiar with ‘What the Ladybird Heard’ at all? Which Julia Donaldson book is your (or your kid’s) favourite?
