Preteen dealing with breakouts? {Dermalogica Clear Start Range}

Puberty seems to be hitting our house a little earlier that I expected. I don’t mean just because of the eye-rolls that I am always getting! I noticed late last year that Addison was really battling with red, angry and inflamed looking skin. As a teenager, I battled with acne and it was awful…and I just don’t want that same path for my kids. In December, a very unconscious adult made a comment about her skin, that took my breath away. Addison is NOT super sensitive about her skin, but I knew it could potentially become an issue. Kids can be cruel…..well…I guess adults can be even worse hey?? I thought about it, and decided to reach out to Dermalogica to review their Clear Start range and trial it on Addison.

There were concerns though, what if the products don’t work? I don’t want to bad mouth a brand when the concept of the review was MY IDEA. Like…hey, give me these cool products….shoot, sorry it sucks! Who wants to be that person? Though, if it sucks, rest assured that I am going to tell you, in the most diplomatically correct way that I can. Needless to say though, my worries were so unfounded! I LOVE Dermalogica as a brand, I trust them with my skin, so I just believed I could trust them with my 10yr old’s skin.Dermalogica Clear Start

Breakout Clearing Kit (RSP R449)

Dermalogica Clearing Foam Wash – 75ml

This breakout fighting foaming wash clears away dead skin cells, dirt and excess oils that clog pores and cause breakouts. Use on your face, back, neck … wherever skin requires deep cleaning and pore clearing for fewer breakouts.

This face wash has a very light citrus scent and has a light gel consistency. It’s gentle on the skin, non drying and I don’t feel like it leaves my skin feeling stripped. Addison uses this morning and night, most days, but I make sure especially on days she plays sports, that she cleanses well. This cleanser contains extracts of balm mint, eucalyptus, and tea tree help eliminate bacteria and congestion as menthol and camphor help cool inflammation. This just sounds like the perfect blend of ingredients to calm skin going through a breakout.

Dermalogica Clearing Booster

Dermalogica Clearing Booster 10ml

A fast-acting acne treatment that works within 15 minutes. Formulated with Salicylic Acid to help kill breakout-causing bacteria for rapid skin clearing. Patented TT Technology and Phytoplankton Extract work with skin’s natural microbiome and help prevent over-drying. Niacinamide reinforces skin’s defensive barrier and helps to even skin tone, while seaweed-derived Chrondrus Crispus Extract soothes irritated skin.

This is effectively what I think of as a sort of ‘spot treatment’ and I personally found that this is too mild for my skin. That however, is what prompted me to think this would work on a 10yr old’s skin. This didn’t sting or dry out my skin at all, so I have complete peace of mind that this will be (and is) really gentle on Addison’s skin. Within a day the angry red is calm, and the fine pimples start disappearing. Within 2 to 3 days, there’s a remarkable difference in Addison’s skin.

Dermalogica Skin Soothing Hydrating Lotion 30ml

Say goodbye to dehydrated, breakout-irritated skin with this lightweight moisturizer! Sheer, easy-to-apply formula helps soothe discomfort and hydrate areas that feel dry.

The hydrating lotion has such a lightweight formula and sinks into the skin effortlessly. In the event that the Clearing Booster does dry out any areas on the skin, this lotion is right there to add back the moisture!

Dermalogica Blackhead Clearing Fizz Mask 50ml  RRP 329.00 (NEW not in kit)

This unique mask’s active fizzing formula effectively cleans pores and helps target blackheads. Technology activates upon application, helping to open pores, decongest skin and facilitate blackhead extractions. Sulfur provides anti-microbial benefits to help keep skin clear. Kaolin Clay absorbs excess oil and purifies the skin . Apple Fruit Extract helps hydrate the skin.

I actually purchased this mask before it was sent to me and I really love it. The fizzing takes some getting used to though…around the nose area….oh my soul. No jokes, this stuff FIZZES! I love it though, I just imagine it’s fizzing into my pores, lifting the dirt out and clearing those blackheads. Just so we’re clear though…this mask isn’t designed to eliminate blackheads, but to facilitate blackhead extraction. This smells similar to my FAVOURITE Dermalogica Mask, the charcoal rescue masque, and I assume it has to do with the Sulphur.

The first 3 products do come in a convenient travel sized bag and kit and retails for R449,95, which I don’t think is a bad price for products that work! If you have a preteen or a teen that is feeling self conscious about their skin, I highly recommend that you try the Dermalogica Clear Start Range out. I will definitely be repurchasing these products for her. The Blackhead Clearing Fizz Mask is sold separately and retails for R329.

Final thoughts

Despite being concerned that I was starting her on products too young, I am 100% happy with going ahead with this trial. For Addison’s skin, the Dermalogica Clear Start range has been a game changer. I can immediately see when she’s slacked on her routine, but even then, it’s nowhere near as bad as it was in December. Her skin is smooth and calmer, though with being a pre-teen, I have no doubt she will have flare ups as time goes on.

I would have LOVED to include before and after pictures, but with her age in mind and to respect her privacy, I will not. I really didn’t want to put pictures on the internet of her pimples. The results would honestly speak for themselves, but I just could not do that to her.

I think this is perfect for starting your pre-teen on a good skincare routine, and even teenagers and young adults. I don’t think there’s an age limit for who can use this range. For purposes of this review though, my aim was on my 10yr old daughter. Have you tried the Dermalogica Clear Start range?
