My Lovely Wife – a diabolical masterpiece! {Audio book}
Not too long ago, I gave you a glimpse into my first audio book experience. The book I chose to review was okay…..and then I realised on Audible, you’re able to ‘exchange’ a book you weren’t entirely happy with. Look, I personally think this system can be abused, because I could ‘hate’ every book and swop it over and over…. but anyways, I was happy to swop my book for My Lovely Wife. I’d seen this book splashed around bookstagram many many times, so I figured I’d give it a go.
What is My Lovely Wife about?
Our love story is simple. I met a gorgeous woman. We fell in love. We had kids. We moved to the suburbs. We told each other our biggest dreams, and our darkest secrets. And then we got bored.
We look like a normal couple. We’re your neighbors, the parents of your kid’s friend, the acquaintances you keep meaning to get dinner with.
We all have secrets to keeping a marriage alive.
Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.
My Review
The characters and storyline
The characters primarily revolve around the narrator (husband) and his lovely wife, Milicent. We also meet their kids, some friends/colleagues that they interact with and family, through the husband narrating stories that involve them.
This couple goes to soccer matches and are like your every day, average family….except they’re not. The storyline is pretty diabolical….think Mr and Mrs Smith meets Dexter!
My thoughts
Guys, this is a wicked, crazy read! To be reading about a couple whose favourite pastime is killing women, is really sickening….. BUT reading is to suspend reality, so know that it is NOT REAL… it’s all FICTIONAL!
This was a really great book, well paced, well plotted and gripping. I laughed at inappropriate times, I felt sympathy for people who probably don’t deserve sympathy…this was a roller coaster of emotions. Especially guilty emotions for enjoying this book so much! When the twists happen, or as secrets are revealed, I literally dropped my jaw and went….no ways!!! I did find with some of the twists, I was expecting them, but it didn’t make it any less surprising.
I do wish there was some more communication between the key players towards the end, that would be my only gripe.
It’s been a while since I’ve ‘read’ a book narrated by only one person. I listened to the audio book on Audible and I have to say, I thought the actual narrator on there was BRILLIANT.
My rating
My Lovely Wife has a Goodreads rating of 3.92 out of 5 stars, which is to me, is a good rating. I’d rate it around 4 stars myself! My Lovely Wife retails for around R290, but is currently going for R219 on Takealot.com.
As an audio book, My Lovely Wife has a listening time of just over 10hrs.
