Night time skin care routine for oily skin!

About this heat……wherever the ‘oven of planet earth‘ is located, can somebody please go and close it??? With loadshedding on top of it, especially at work…..it becomes a bit of a nightmare. I sometimes go and sit in my car with the air con running, but alas, I cannot be doing that for 2hrs at a time!! I absolutely hate my skin feeling oily and heavy, so I’m always trying to ensure that my skin care routine gives me just enough hydration, without looking oily, especially with the heat… because I can go from fresh faced glow to ‘would you like to fry an egg on my forehead?’ very fast!

Today I want to share with you the skin care products that I use regularly. I’m starting with my night time routine, purely because it consists of a few more products, whereas my day time routine is pretty simple. Okay, so let’s jump into my night time skin care routine for my oily skin! Also, maybe grab a cup of coffee, I think this is going to be a long one!

Skin type

Before we jump in, just a quick recap….I have a really oily T-zone and I’d say normal cheeks. I do have the occasional pimple, but nowhere near what I used to go through.

Water

I may sound like a broken record here, because I say this in EVERY skin care post! Water, water, water….is your skin’s best friend! I drink at least 2-3 litres a day and you can immediately tell when there’s a drop in that number…it’ll show up on my face! I will get dehydrated very quickly….especially if I’ve been book-clubbing, drinking some wine and skimping on the water.

Lamelle Clarity Active Cleanser

Lamelle Clarity Active Cleanse is a daily soap-free, foaming gel that cleanses deeply but gently. It increases exfoliation while maintaining the integrity of the skin barrier in oily, congested skins. This is also both anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial due to a combination of botanical extracts and hydrating ingredients that soothe and calm irritated skin and reduce oil. It also removes make-up. Suitable for oily, acne-prone skins.

Key Ingredients include Salicylic Acid which with its keratolytic action helps to exfoliate and remove dry, dead skin cells from the surface of the skin. Extracts of Myrrh and Tea Tree oil provide strong anti-bacterial and anti-fungal activity while helping to reduce infection. Ivy extract tones and decongests oily skin. Allantoin soothes and keeps the skin fresh and revitalised. Fragrance-free (no artificial fragrance) only a natural tea tree scent. Not tested on animals.

I’ve gone for Lamelle Beta Plus peels with Optiskin and that did wonders for my skin (and breakouts), so I was happy to try out this cleanser from the brand. This cleanser has a gel like texture and has a really subtle foam.

Previously, I had not really put too much thought into my cleansers. Clean my face, don’t leave it feeling tight, I’m good to go! What’s the point of wonderful ingredients in a cleanser, that is on your face for all of 5 seconds? Now what I love about this cleanser is that it has amazing ingredients, AND they encourage you to leave this on your skin for at least 1-2 minutes. This makes sense to me… give those amazing ingredients some extra time to penetrate the skin!

Garnier Green Tea Toner

Garnier’s Botanical Toner

Garnier’s first toner made of 96% ingredients of natural origin, enriched with Green Tea Extract, known for its purifying powers. It removes make up residue and impurities whilst toning your skin and leaving it feeling beautifully purified.

I have not used a lot of Garnier’s skin care, with the exception of their much loved micellar water, so I was really curious about this toner. The range is aimed at Oily/Combination skin, so I thought it was perfect for me, as well as really affordable! I like that it contains salicylic acid, because I can never have enough of this stuff on my face! This is a pretty decent toner and it doesn’t leave my skin feeling stripped or tight. I do feel that it removes all excess dirt that my cleanser may not have removed effectively as well.

I also love how transparent the brand is with their ingredients. On the back of the toner you will find the origin of every single ingredient, and best of all, 96% of this product is naturally derived. It’s free of parabens, silicones and artificial colourants.

Skin Renewal Booster

Superstart Skin Renewal Booster

Boost your skin’s natural defenses.

Boost your skin’s ability to renew.

And Boost the results of your skincare products.

SUPERSTART SKIN RENEWAL BOOSTER helps restore the healthy look of skin’s surface layer, fortifying its natural ability to repair and renew. Used before a serum or moisturizer, it boosts the results of your skincare products. Your skin looks beautiful, resilient and refreshed, ready to face the day.

I’d previously been using a deluxe sample size of the Skin Renewal Booster and I was extremely taken by it! This product genuinely feels like it boosts the impact of any product I apply after using it. It’s a very lightweight, almost gel-like formula, and sinks into the skin really fast. This is the product I never knew I needed in my skin care routine!!

Also, the actual packaging the product is housed in, is fantastic! The back of the bottle has a ‘lock’ mechanism, so if Adam ever gets his hands on this, chances are it’ll be very difficult to wreak havoc! You can also control how much you pump out. I usually use about a pump and a smidgen.

Neutrogena Hydro Boost Eye Awakening Gel-Cream

A boost of freshness:

  • Its lightweight gel formula awakens tired eyes and helps fade away signs of fatigue while instantly absorbing into skin to smartly smooth the way for make-up.
  • Locks in hydration for 24 hours to prevent loss of suppleness and keep eyes looking fresh every day.

I am not the biggest advocate for eye cream, only because I just use my moisturiser as an eye cream usually. It’s less steps in an already step-heavy routine, for me….because…3 kids, no time for nothing! BUT I spotted this eye cream at Clicks one day and people were raving about it on social media, so I figured why not? It’s also really affordable so I guess I had nothing to lose….well except my money.

It is really lightweight (I know, a common theme for me with all my products) and it is absorbed into my skin really fast. It feels nice and smooth going on to the skin and works well under my concealer. I’m not sure this is for heavy duty, lines-under-the-eyes sort of situations, but if you’re younger, with minimal lines, this would be a good eye cream if you’re looking for one. Clarins Double Serum

Clarins Double Serum is a Complete Age Control Concentrate formulated to help work on the 5 vital functions of the skin for a more youthful and radiant complexion. Now containing 21 active plant extracts including new star ingredient turmeric, distinguished for its exceptional anti-ageing properties. New Double Serum acts on the appearance of major signs of skin-ageing, skin is more radiant, firmer and fine lines are smoothed. The new innovative bottle delivers a made-to-measure dosage of the serum, thanks to its rotating push button.

I have raved about the Clarins Double Serum for years now on the blog, so this doesn’t need to be too long. This is a fantastic product and I feel like it really looks after my skin, in terms of fine lines, texture and evening out skin tone as well. Usually, you are supposed to use this before a moisturiser, but this is usually where I call it quits. This gives me enough moisture, so I don’t feel the need for an additional cream. Oily skin needs moisture as well, but the right type of moisture. The Double Serum provides enough for my skin type. Also, lots of kids…. sometimes hours go by between toning and serum…because:

  • 8pm….bedtime kids! ‘But mom I’m hungry!’
  • Time to bath!
  • Did you study for that test tomorrow?
  • Have you taken your lunchboxes out of your bags?
  • Crap, let me go prep lunchboxes for tomorrow….oh look, I need to wash them first….because, nobody took them out after school! Urgh…..

So if I can stop at this step, it gives me more time to get to my #momlife duties!

In conclusion

I think that my skin care routine is quite simple….but I know some of you may be thinking: This is simple??? I’m almost 40….so I am at that age where I’m wishing I took better care of my skin when I was younger. I live in hope that it’s not too late….and I do what I can with the budget that I have. This is a nice mix of budget and maybe a bit of a splurge (for some of you)….others are like…this is ALL BUDGET… Girl where is the La Mer? lol.

If you have oily skin, let me know what your skin care routine consists of! I love seeing what other people are using! If you have any questions about any of these products, ask in the comments, email, DM, whatever floats your boat 😉 Also, do you want to see a day time version of this post?
