Family fun with Spot It! + Giveaway ⋆ An Ordinary Gal

Is it just me or is it really chilly all of a sudden? Winter has decided it is not waiting for June, and has made it’s presence felt a little bit earlier this year…. This means less time for my kiddos outdoors and more time bickering indoors, unless I find something for them to do indoors to entertain them. Thankfully we love playing games as a family and Spot it is a game we play together quite regularly, so this helps us with filling up the time indoors.

What is Spot It?

The basic structure of the game: the deck has 55 cards, with eight symbols on each card. Deal each player one card, place the rest in a pile face up, the first player to shout out the symbol which matches their card with the one of the top of the pile takes the card, repeat until all the cards are gone. The player with the most cards at the end, wins.

The beauty of the game is that it doesn’t matter which two cards you choose, one symbol always matches. It’s not by magic that this happens, but by a mathematical equation. There are five ways to play the game – The Tower, The Hot Potato, The Well, The Poisoned Gift, and Triplet. They are all based on the speed at which a player spots a match.

Sometimes it might look like the two cards on the table don’t have a matching symbol. This is because each card has eight symbols and sometimes the matching shape is a different size or orientation. To play the game, players need to quickly pattern-match and memorise, and work on perception. All of which are beneficial to young children.

Why we love Spot It!

Spot It is fun, plain and simple….my kids love to play it with us on family game nights and they also love to play it with each other. It’s uncomplicated, so I don’t need to explain 100 rules to them (especially helpful if you have younger children) for them to enjoy it. The game aids with memory and improves hand-eye coordination. This game is pretty fast paced, so kids need to pay attention constantly, which improves focus all round…during the game, at school, in all aspects of life.

Spot It is just really a great way for kids and parents to unwind and to interact with each other….where it doesn’t involve us parents nagging about homework and chores 😉
